About Big Hole River Wild and Scenic River corridor

The Big Hole River Wild and Scenic River corridor stretches approximately 149 miles through southwestern Montana, preserving a critical segment of the Big Hole River and its surrounding valleys. The river flows from the rugged Beaverhead Mountains through expansive grasslands and forested canyons, eventually merging with the Beaverhead River to form the Jefferson River. This corridor protects critical riparian habitat used by native fish species such as the genetically distinct populations of westslope cutthroat trout, along with diverse wildlife including elk, deer, osprey, and bald eagles. The river and surrounding landscape also hold deep cultural and historical significance, from Native American presence to the pivotal 1877 Battle of the Big Hole during the Nez Perce War. Outdoor recreation here centers around fishing, with the river being famous for its blue-ribbon trout waters. Other activities include hiking along adjacent trails, wildlife viewing, hunting in designated areas, and photography. The corridor offers a remote experience with limited development, emphasizing natural soundscapes and water quality. Access points are scattered along state highways and forest roads, making it a favored destination for anglers and nature enthusiasts seeking peaceful, high-quality wild places. The designation as a Wild and Scenic River ensures long-term protection from damming and degradation, preserving the corridor’s free-flowing character and ecological health. Visitors appreciate the blend of rugged mountain scenery, rich biodiversity, and the quiet solitude the corridor provides.
